Blog Open Mic

Welcome everyone. It’s time for a blog open mic and a chance to express yourself.

Microphone Check. One Two.

What is a blog open mic? I learned about it on Eugene Cho's blog. I also copied the text below. Feel free to

It’s simply a digital version of an OPEN MIC. In the comments section on this post, you can share [almost] anything…

What are some possibilities for the open mic?

  • a news story
  • your cause or another cause you want to call attention to
  • your blog
  • random thoughts
  • scripture that has spoken to you recently
  • world changing ideas
  • your music or plug your bands
  • your confessions
  • rants against me or rage against the machine
  • inspiring stories
  • the answers to life
  • your art, your poetry, prose or haiku
  • interesting links
  • promote an event
  • share your faith, fears, insecurities, and hopes

You can share whatever as long as it’s not hateful, vitriolic, etc.

So, here is your chance to express yourself. Take a minute and “open mic.”

I am going to share a confession. Last night I ate the last ice cream treat after my 4-year-old was asleep. Even though I knew she would want it. Even though I knew she would likely be really sad that it was gone. I ate it because I wanted it, and more than that I just didn't want to share. Because sometimes I am just plain tired of sharing the treats.

Thanks, I feel much better now. :)

I like to brag. For example, I did my blog design (including the graphics) myself. And last week I ran a mile for the first time since high school. And I have the bestest, happiest baby evar!

I was doing my Bible study yesterday, and this verse really spoke to me:

"When You said 'Seek My face," my heart said to You, 'Your face, O Lord, I shall seek.'" Psalm 27:8

Oh, to have kind of desire and faith David had. I have to keep reminding myself that it takes time to grow and harvest; it just doesn't spring up over night.

I enjoy reading about your thoughts on parenting and wonder what you'd think of the book "Parenting by the Book" by John Rosemond. I have a copy I'll mail to you if you want! Hannah Byrne

Amber and Holly--glad I found you on Twitter, it' been to get to know you better and share the journey of motherhood.

HFW--glad you interpreted what the verse meant to you.

Hannah, I'm assuming you've found the book helpful? I'd be interested in hearing what you gathered from reading it. I read the first chapter or so from his website. It was tough wading past all that he's against and criticizing. Email me?

Anyone want to share a link or info on a cause you're passionate about?

The answer? SLEEP.

I go to be insanely early and people think I am nuts. People ask me how I manage working full time and being a mother too. One thing I do--that my own working mom did when we were growing up--is go to bed super early, like always before 8p or 8:30pm. I wake up at 5am and have quiet meditation time before the day begins.

I love how much you and your blog inspire me. I would owe you royalties if I made any money.

Also, I'm a howling hypocrite, in that I'm a comment beggar on my own site, but almost never comment on yours (or any, really). But I read, and I always love your comments on my posts.

Also, send me something for the Primer. You know you want to. (Feminism and Christianity? Explaining beauty products for work to your kids without normalizing messed up gender roles? The up or downsides of WAHM and WOHM?)

Rachel - Great idea!

CONFESSION: I'm severely behind on my blog reading and I'm sure I'm losing my own readers as a result of it. Need to get moving!

SHAMELESS SELF PROMOTION: I'm going to be featured in the FOOD section of our local Milwaukee newspaper on August 5th!! WOOT!

Ah...confession time! As a former English major, I'm ashamed to admit that I haven't read a novel in its entirety for at least three years. I now have two on my bedstand (Ayn Rand and Joyce Carol Oates) that I've begun, though I don't know how far I'll get with either one. I read all day for my job, so, aside from reading blogs, about all I can muster up energy for is the occasional Parents or Us magazine.

As for shameless self promotion, I'm pretty proud of my blog, even though I've only been at it for about a month. I'm still trying to find my focus as far as content goes, but I've generally been pleased with my posts. Thanks for letting me plug, Rachel! I really enjoy reading your posts. Even when I don't agree 100%, you get me thinking, and I like that.

although I dont have kids and only recently got married, I really enjoy your blog. I read about your adventures in rearing your little ones, and I think about how I would like to incorporate so much of what you do, if I have a baby.

I blogged about a verse that spoke to me today, but here it is again: 1 John 5:4 "For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith."

Arwyn, well, I guess we mutually inspire each other. Thanks for the inspiration for my feminist post. I've been stumped.

Lo, I must be special because you seem to read and comment on every one of my posts. Make sure to Tweet a link to the newspaper. Glad the paper knows REAL TALENT.

Mom2Peach--would Ayn Rand be appalled by recent government actions? But maybe health care reform that expands choice is also an expansion of pure capitalism. Something to consider.
